OVERVIEW:
Construction is a large, diverse and fast-growing sector of the economy, comprising several distinct categories of activity. Construction accounts for approximately 5 percent of non-farm payroll employment in the U.S. and 12 percent of self-employment. Construction is also an important sector of the Canadian economy, where it employs one of every 16 workers. Most companies specialize in only a few, or just one, type of building construction, since the demonstrated ability to successfully complete a project is prime criteria for winning a contract. Within a single project, some contractors may specialize in "ground up" work (foundation, floors, walls, roof) or in more profitable "finish work" (interior walls, electrical, painting, plumbing, HVAC).
